The History of Baby Showers.
We know it as something the American’s do! The popularity of Baby Showers has now crossed the Atlantic and at Bababoom we’re here to help you organise one for yourself.
From individual gifts to corporate hampers, invitations and our new Baby Shower list, which work the same way as wedding lists do, here at Bababoom we can create something just for you!
The history of where Baby Showers originated from points toward a German immigrant in the USA who started as a silversmith. He used to encourage gift-giving among the upper-classes of New York. His name was Franz Schauer which is how the event got the name Baby Shower. Since then the idea of Baby Showers have spread all over the world.
A baby shower is a way to celebrate the pending or recent birth of a child by giving gifts at a party. Gifts can be for the mother, baby or even both! Traditionally only women attend the event as it is an opportunity for the expectant mother to share stories of her pregnancy and give advice to her friends. Although the mother hosts the shower is it usual for a close friend to organise the event. Let’s not forget the mother may still be pregnant and tired!
During the baby shower there are favours, gifts, and games to be played. Not to mention the odd glass raised!

Shower games!
- Guess the birth date/time & weight of baby.
- Guess the expectant mothers tum: guests cut pieces of ribbon, yarn, or toilet paper to a length they believe matches the mother-to-be's tummy circumference.
- Guess the baby food flavour: guests have to taste-test several flavours of baby food and try to identify them.
- Guess the Mess Game. Supply 4 nappies and mini chocolate bars with Guess the Mess Cards. Simply melt the chocolate bars into each nappy and then guess which chocolate bars they are. It’ll keep the guests guessing for ages!
- Baby Bank. Make sure you tell everyone to bring change e.g. 20 p pieces or 50p the idea of the game is each person is given a name tag such as bib or pram etc. Then everyone has to call that person by the name on the tag and not their name. If they call them by the name they have to put a 20p piece or whatever you decide in a bottle or money box which will then go towards the baby bank.
- Cotton Balls! The object of the game is to scoop as many cotton wool balls in a bowl using a wooden spoon while being blindfolded in 30 seconds.
- Baby shower bingo.
- Other games include a nappy, with sweets or chocolates, and create a throw game.
